What Is NLP, Really? Separating the Attitude from the Hype

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the personal-development world. Ask ten trainers what NLP is and you will get ten different answers — most of them wrong.

The most useful definition is deceptively simple: NLP is an attitude that leaves a trail of techniques. The attitude is one of curiosity, experimentation, and a relentless focus on what actually works. The techniques — anchoring, the metamodel, the Milton model, submodalities — are the footprints that attitude leaves behind.

Why the definition matters

When trainers forget the attitude and fetishize the techniques, NLP degenerates into a bag of tricks. Worse, it starts to look like pseudoscience: vague promises, unfalsifiable claims, and an insistence that you simply "trust the process."

Real NLP is precise. It models excellence, it clarifies language, and it can be tested. If a claim cannot be bet on, it probably is not NLP.

The takeaway

Before you sign up for any NLP training, ask yourself: does this trainer treat NLP as a disciplined study of subjective experience, or as a belief system you have to buy into? The difference is everything.
